A police officer protects the safety of his or her
fellow citizens. A police
officer
guards our property and our streets and sometimes risks
his or her life or severe injury in doing so.
It is sad but
there are bad people who try to make their way by
hurting others or by taking what belongs to others.
Police officers try to prevent those people from doing
those things or, when they cannot be prevented, to find
the people who have done such things and bring them to
justice. By bring them to justice is meant to
bring them to court to have their fellow citizens
determine whether they did the thing of which they are
accused and, if so, to decide what punishment should be
given to them.
Police
officers perform many duties. Besides crime
prevention and detection, they act as safety officers on
our streets and highways. They also rescue people who are in
danger of being hurt.
Police
officers are our friends and protectors. Without
them, there would be no safety. People would be
unable to travel or to work or play or go to school for
fear that they would not be safe from the harm caused by
bad people and by accidents.
AHMAD’S FATHER VISITS HIS SCHOOL
Ahmad’s
father is a police officer. On "Safety
Day" at Al Andalus School, his father came to
lecture the teachers and students in the school
auditorium. Ahmad was proud to see his father
standing in the center of the stage in his blue uniform
and was even prouder when he smiled and waved to him.
That made all the children in front of Ahmad turn to
look at him and smile.
The school
principal introduced Ahmad’s father. Ahmad was
surprised. He knew that as a police officer he was
important but never dreamed that the school principal
would introduce him. Ahmad was glad that the
principal did not mention that he was his son because it
would have embarrassed him to be pointed out by the
principal before all the other students.
After
the principal sat down, Ahmad’s father gave his talk
and told the teachers and children how important it was
to be safe and obey the law. He showed them how
traffic lights and "Walk/Don't Walk" signs are necessary for
their safety and well being. He talked to them
about crime prevention and how to call police and fire
fighters should the need arise. Then he talked about how to
settle disputes without fighting and how fighting was
bad in most cases.
When he
finished the teachers and students applauded him and the
principal thanked him for coming to see them. He
looked at Ahmad again and smiled. The children
then returned to their classes and Ahmad did not see his
father again until he came home from work that evening.
