The structure of the Simple Past for regular verbs is:

The structure of the Simple Past for irregular verbs is really the same. The only difference is that with regular verbs the past form is always "-ed" but with irregular verbs you have to learn the past form:

We use the Simple Past to talk about an event in the past. The event can be short or long.

Here is a "short" event:

  • The car exploded at 9.30am.

Here is a "long" event:

  • I lived in Bangkok for 2 years.

We use the Simple Past when:

  • the event is in the past
  • the event is completely finished
  • we say the time and place of the event

Here are some more examples:

  • I lived in that house when I was young.
  • He didn't like the film.
  • Did you watch television last night?
  • John drove to London on Monday.
  • Mary did not go to work yesterday.
  • Did you see Titanic?
  • I was at work yesterday.
  • We were not late.
  • Were you angry?
