We often need to describe trends in business and the economy when speaking English. The following words and expressions are all commonly used.

to go up / to go down
"Prices have gone up / gone down by 10%."

 

to increase / to decrease 
"The cost of living is increasing / decreasing."

 

to rise / to fall 

"Prices are rising again."

 

to peak at / to bottom out at (highest or lowest point)
"Shares peaked at 679p then fell."
"Shares bottomed out at 37p then rose."

 

to rocket / to plummet (dramatic rise or fall)
"House prices rocketed in the South East last year."
"The Euro plummeted against the US Dollar, then rose

 

to soar (fly high, like an eagle!)
"Soaring house prices make it difficult for first-time buyers to buy a house."

 

to drop
"Increased labour costs have caused profits to drop

 

to level out (become stable)   تبقى ثابتة
"Share prices have levelled out this month at 497p

 

to recover (improve after a bad period)    تنتعش
"The Euro has recovered after last week's heavy trading."

 

to stagnate (staying at a low point, and not moving at all. This is a negative word)   تتجمد
"The economy is stagnating."

 

to strengthen / to weaken تقوى أو تضعف العملة
"The pound has strengthened against the dollar."

 

to remain stable
"The cost of petrol has remained stable."

 

an upward trend / a downward trend
"There has been an upward trend in the price of houses."

Ways of talking about movement

steady - a steady rise

slight - a slight improvement on       بطيئ

moderate - a moderate recovery    معتدل

dramatic - a dramatic rise        مفاجئ وكبير

substantial - substantial growth        كبير
